Over the past few weeks, the Notre Dame community gave up high street shopping and tried recycled swapping instead!
Our fantastic student Eco Team came up with the idea, inviting staff and students to donate items of clothing and books that they no longer wanted in exchange for points to spend in the swop shop.
After collecting and sorting donations for a week, the Eco Team opened for business. The swap shop was a great success.
Given in to swap
- 134 books
- 10 accessories
- 261 tops
- 165 bottoms
- 43 over layers
Swapped out by students/staff
- 52 books and one-point items
- 6 accessories
- 69 tops
- 34 bottoms
- 23 over layers
All remaining items will be donated to charity before the end of term, to the college library, a refugee charity, and St Gemma’s Hospice.
The following message was sent to all staff and students from the Eco Team Council (Vanessa Thai, Ebonie Hudspith, and Jasmine Chetham).
“Thank you for making the swap shop such a success! We hope we’ve shown that getting your clothes second-hand is just as viable (and more environmentally friendly) as buying new. This has been our first project as a group, and the enthusiasm and kindness you’ve shown is incredible. We’d like to say a huge thank you to all the people we couldn’t have done this without, including all our wonderful student volunteers.”
