Last week, Lower Sixth A-level History and Politics students travelled to the Thackray Museum of Medicine to attend West Yorkshire Mayor Tracy Brabin's Question time. Notre Dame was well represented as students Alice Jackson, Cora Lindsey, Giulio Macaluso and Mr Clifford (Head of History and Politics) all asked important questions on topics such as the environment, transport and inclusion. See some examples below:
What specific steps is West Yorkshire taking to reduce its carbon emissions, and how do you plan to support local communities and businesses in adopting more sustainable practices?
Please could you explain what specific challenges have led to some bus routes in Leeds being cut, which many young people rely on for their school and work commutes, and how your plans will restore these services to create a more reliable and affordable network for commuters?
There has been previous attempts to bring trams back to Leeds (for example the Leeds Supertram, initially proposed in 1980, with planning beginning in 1991) which were unsuccessful. These attempts collapsed at the cost of millions of pounds to taxpayers. What is your strategy to ensure the Mass Transit scheme is successfully delivered this time around?
One student raved of the opportunity to attend the session and said 'It was amazing to meet out mayor and ask questions on topics that directly affect us AND link to our studies'.
Tracy Brabin was very impressed with our students and gave them a pep talk about how important they are for the future of Leeds and the UK. Watch this space!
