On Sunday 12th May, Graham Hamlyn, Head of Theatre Arts, ran the Leeds half marathon, and Greg Davis, Senior Technician, ran the full marathon. Together they raised money for Papyrus - a UK charity working for UK Prevention of Young Suicide. Below are some statistics from Papyrus' research -
- Suicide is the main cause of death om young people under the age of 35 in the UK
- In 2021, 1,905 young people under the age of 21 took their own lives. Over three quarters of them were boys or young men
- On average, over five young people take their lives each day
- Over 200 teenagers are lost to suicide every year
Despite the heat, Graham and Greg did fantastically well; doing themselves and the college proud, all whilst raising money for a worthy cause. Graham quotes, 'A thoroughly enjoyable experience (despite the heat!) to be amongst so many people supporting and running for great causes. It very much lived up to its spirit of running 'with a mate, for a mate!''. Greg commented, 'After watching Graham run the marathon last year I felt inspired to sign up and give it a go for myself. The course was tough at parts but the crowds and community spirit really keep you going. Thanks to all staff that came to support us on the day!'
Between them, through online and cash donations, they have raised nearly £500. If you'd like to donate, please click here.
