This summer marks the first cohort of T Level students finishing their courses and Notre Dame is marking this moment by celebrating their success. Notre Dame was one of the first providers to offer these brand new qualifications to students in West Yorkshire in 2020.
T Levels are qualifications for 16 to 19 year olds, taken after GCSEs. They are broadly equivalent in size to 3 A levels and focus on technical and vocational skills. They can help students into skilled employment, higher study or apprenticeships. They are now available to study in a wide range of subjects, with Notre Dame offering courses in Digital and Health.
These pioneering new qualifications have been designed in collaboration with leading employers to provide the skills that businesses across the region need. The subject areas on offer reflect some of the top business growth areas such as digital skills, health and social care and construction. From September 2022, courses in Education and Childcare, Business and Administration, and Media will also be available to study at Notre Dame.
T Levels are unique as they combine classroom study with industry placements so young people gain valuable work experience in their chosen sector. Many local businesses including Nestle and Yorkshire Water are embracing T Levels as a great way to bring in new ideas and the latest skills, and a new way to find, nurture and secure young talent.
David and Kaytlen (pictured) are one of the first ever students to complete a T Level. They both studied the Digital T Level and David completed his placement at Proactive Code (now Digital Energy) in Morley and Kaytlen completed her placement at Cox Automotive in Leeds.
David said, “It’s good to recognise while the T Level is new, it’s proven very well suited for my future. The industry placement has taught me skills you can’t learn in the classroom environment and has allowed me to put my skills into practice. I’m now really excited to start my degree course at the University of Huddersfield and study Software Engineering.”
Kaytlen said, “My T Level course was definitely the right choice for me and my future and I can’t wait to start my degree apprenticeship with my industry placement provider, Cox Automotive.”
Justine Barlow, Principal of Notre Dame, said "We are very proud to celebrate the success of our first cohort of T-level students. We were selected as one of the first providers in the country to offer these fantastic new qualifications and it has been fantastic to see them being embraced by our young people and employers across Leeds. I look forward to seeing our students continue to achieve as they prepare for the next step - whether it's straight into the workforce, university, or an apprenticeship.”
